My Imaginary Friend

Style Frames for Animation

Group Project

In “My Imaginary Friend” we follow Steven, a burnt out creative in the industry stuck in an artist’s block. He is constantly creating, but none of his work inspires him anymore. This block continues until an illustration from earlier in his artistic career comes to life. Nara, a pure childlike character filled with life, escapes out of his old drawing. Her goal is to remind him of a time where he was excited to create. Often times artists get stuck looking for ideas, when all it takes is to look right in front of them for inspiration.

Storyboard

In this project, I was responsible for creating the storyboard and initial lighting passes, and modeling numerous objects. I wanted a scene that created a sense of urgency, but one that also inspired wonder and joy. This part of the project was most educational and formative because we had to adjust and merge our unique design and artistic visions into a coherent voice.

Character Process

I was responsible for compositing the illustrations into the 3d space as well as the lighting Nara, the drawing would cast. Using an alpha card and lights in Arnold, I created a 2D image that affects the 3D world. Her “light” would represent the inspiration and joy of creation that is being transferred to Steven, the artist, and the environment that he is in. Later, I would composite the “magical” effects around her and her brush in After Effects.

Ultimately, we wanted to tell a story between a creator and their creation. We wanted to show that the two need one another, and it’s best not to forget your roots. Beyond those points, however, we wanted to make a sequence that makes you smile.
